What skills do I need to be a successful typing contractor?

Typist Careers

Contrary to popular belief that 'anyone can type', we view typists as highly skilled professionals who rely on their skills and experience to perform work of the highest quality.

The skills we look for in applicants include:

  • Passion - You need to be passionate about what you do and take pride in the work you submit. At Sterling Transcription we aim to exceed expectations for all clients, so we look for typists who are eager to help us with this.
  • Communication - You need to be able to communicate via email, Skype and phone. We expect you to be an open and responsive communicator who is quick to alert us to any issues, particularly in relation to client deadlines.
  • Language - You don't need to be a native English speaker, however you do need to have great command of English spelling, grammar and punctuation. You need to understand how different word choices can change the context and meaning conveyed by the speaker.
  • Management - As you are running your own business, you need to have excellent time management skills. You alone are responsible for the quality, productivity and invoices of yourself and any workers you hire.
  • Listening - You need to be able to transcribe files that may be poor audio quality or have difficult accents. You also need to be aware of what you hear and ensure that it is within the context of what is being discussed.
  • Research - You must be able research key terms and names using the Internet (Google). As part of providing quality transcripts, typists are expected to research and confirm spelling any words with which they are unfamiliar.
  • Computer literacy - You must be able to type at a minimum of 60 words per minute with accuracy of at least 97%. You need to have a good understanding of Microsoft Word not only in terms of typing, but also for formatting documents. You also need to be able to download, open and install files and programs as required.
  • Other skills - A tertiary degree will be looked upon favourably.  Excellent general knowledge, being widely read and keeping up to date with current issues will assist you in becoming a highly successful typing contractor.

In addition to all of the above, you need to genuinely enjoy typing!
